Why subscribe to Hurdle Rate?

To my prospective subscribers. The primary reason you may want to subscribe is to come along with me on my investing journey. The name “Hurdle rate” was inspired by none other than Mark Leonard of Constellation Software, and their prolific use of a fixed hurdle (discount) rate for their investments. Had you invested into Constellation Software at the time of their IPO as an Australian Investor you would of seen your investment multiply by >100x or (>35% CAGR), an enviable record (Updated March 2023). Here’s what Mark has to say about Hurdle Rates:

We’ve noticed that when we increase or drop the hurdle rate, all of the expected returns on our new acquisitions seem to increase or drop, respectively, in lock step with the new hurdle rates. We summarise this with the phrase “hurdle rates are magnetic”.

~ Mark Leonard

Also, If you’ve ever considered investing into Accounting, financial advice, consulting or legal businesses and anything related to them, chances are i have them on my radar to research or monitor as I set narrow boundaries on my circle of competence. As a result I consider this to be a specialist approach moreso than most investors.

As a free subscriber, you can expect a short stock pitch (dubbed the ‘one page stock pitch’) every week.

As a paid subscriber (Priced at AU$25/Month or AU$150/Year) you can expect the above PLUS:

  • A deep dive every month

  • In-depth Monthly Portfolio Updates digging into every stock involved in during the quarter.

  • Ad-Hoc posts about investment strategy and investment related brain dumps etc.

Whatever you choose, my primary goal is NOT to sell a newsletter and gain money from doing so, but to incentivise myself to write diligently and improve my process in doing so. I expect the cash flows I gain from substack to be little more than a Hobby and be extremely small in comparison to the value I gain from compounding at as high rate as possible.
